A Place for celebration of life and creation
In 1922 Will Durant, the famed historian, set out to catalog the development of human civilization, to tell our collective story from "barbarianism" to civilization. His first volume of a series originally intended to be a part of a five part volume was released in 1932. "Our Oriental Heritage: The Story of Civilization Volume 1 set the stage for what would only be further expanded into an 11 volume series that would tell the story of human history from the dawn of civilization to the rise and fall of Napoleon. Will Durant opened this first work with some immortal words:
"Civilization is social order promoting cultural creation. Four elements constitute it: economic provision, political organization, moral traditions, and the pursuit of knowledge and the arts. It begins where chaos and insecurity ends. For when fear is overcome, curiosity and constructiveness are free, and man passes by natural impulse toward the understanding and embellishment of life."
Durant like many historians, philosophers, artists, and creators found the value of culture in our lives. The culture that ties all of mankind together, creating both our differences, and yet cementing our similarities across borders. It represents the beauty of life and most importantly what makes us human. Will Durant set out to explore and write on this subject, and that work set him on a voyage that would last a lifetime. The celebration of culture and life is a never ending quest.
The Daily Tofu is just one venture to help explore and embellish cultural creation across the world, a blog, to publish, and to celebrate the very basic foundations of human civilization. Here we celebrate culture, creation, art, and life, in exploring the things that make us human. Through travels to new and distant places, or perhaps just researching and writing on something previously unknown, The Daily Tofu is simply a place for anyone to learn and share in life.
